Summary of How Classroom Performance Systems Support Learning

My favorite technology is the classroom performance system (CPS) which is a
type of student response system. Student response systems are hand-device which students
can use to monitor the student’s progress and the student receives instant feedback. CPS
supports learning supports learning in several ways. First of all, it allows the students to
self-monitor their progress (Roblyer & Doering, 2013, p. 28) and measure the student’s
level of mastery. The use of CPS helps to support Bloom’s mastery learning concept
 (Roblyer & Doering, 2013, p. 39). Additionally, CPS supports Bandura’s social cognitive
 theory as it relates to self-efficacy and self-concepts (Roblyer & Doering, 2013, p. 41).
Also, the CPS allows the students to be engaged during the learning process using this
hand-held device which relates to the social activism theory by Dewey. Dewey believed
learning was beneficial in a social setting (Roblyer & Doering, 2013, p. 41). The final
reason to use the CPS is that it requires the students to process the information without
speaking, which helps to ensure the introverted students are identified and the teacher can
provide additional assistance in the form of scaffolding. Scaffolding is based off of Vygotsky’s
educational concept that learners are individuals, not   a group and the teacher could use the zone
of proximal development to develop tasks that the students can build upon
(Roblyer & Doering, 2013, p. 41-42).

  1. I've never heard of Classroom Performance Systems, however, I'm sure its ability to provide instant student feedback and student monitor is a great resource. Thanks for the information!

  2. This was new to me as well. I have seen them with the Smart & Promethean Boards. Maybe this would be a more cost effective option is the other systems are not? Ensuring active engagement, checking for understanding, and continuous assessment of all students is a difficult task, especially with large class sizes. These Student Response systems would make assessment so much easier!

  3. CPS, also known as clickers, are such a fun tool to have in your classroom! I can remember playing with devices similar to these in certain restaurants as a child and thought they were so neat. I can't imagine being a student and getting to utilize them everyday at school! On the teacher side, they are an excellent way to quickly assess your class and make sure they are "getting" the information.
